Teaching with D&D

Dungeons & Dragons as a learning tool — courses, classroom practice, and notes from years of DMing with kids.

Resources

D&D Beyond is a solid digital character sheet platform, and I used it for years—campaigns for each of my classes lived there. I’m moving away from it toward software I’m building myself, which I hope to release free to the public soon. If you’re still on D&D Beyond and play in one of my games, reach out so we can coordinate how your character is tracked.

RPG Card Maker (Crobi) is a handy browser-based editor for spell and ability cards in many sizes. I used it for paper-character players for a long time. I no longer use it day to day—I print cards with my own character print generator—but it’s still a useful reference if you want a quick, flexible card layout tool.

HeroForge is the go-to custom miniature maker. You get a huge range of options; for about $9 you can download an STL of your character to 3D-print yourself, or for about $20 they’ll print and ship it to you.

5e Magic Shop Generator is great when you need a shop for the party on short notice—quick stock, prices, and flavor without building everything from scratch.

Token Stamp is the simplest way to make virtual or printable tokens for characters and monsters. Drop in an image, get a bordered token. Fast and no fuss.

The Monsters Know is a blog of tactical write-ups for running monsters as more than bags of hit points. Search for what the party is about to fight and you’ll often find an article that sharpens the encounter.

Giffyglyph Monster Maker is a handy browser app for building 5e-style monster stat blocks—quick to dial in CR, traits, and actions when you need a custom creature without starting from a blank page.

Class Character Sheets (2014) is a DM’s Guild bundle of class-specific sheets for the 2014 rules—each class gets a layout tuned to its features instead of a one-size-fits-all form.

Class Character Sheets (2024) is the matching set for the 2024 rules revision, with sheets updated for the new class features and presentation.

I keep a standard list of paints and techniques for terrain crafting here.
