Teaching with D&D

Dungeons & Dragons as a learning tool — courses, classroom practice, and notes from years of DMing with kids.

Crafting

In this course, students learn and practice techniques for building playable dioramas and other projects for tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons.

There is a one-time materials fee of $30 per student. The class also needs a bit more room so everyone can work without crowding each other, plus some level storage for in-progress projects and a sink for cleaning brushes, tools, and hands.

A few techniques—pouring resin and using a heated wire foam cutter—require outdoor or well-ventilated space, but those come up only occasionally. Students will paint and work with clay, so a sink with running water is essential.

I keep a standardized list of paints and techniques for terrain work here.

For examples of my work and my students’ projects, see the Crafting Gallery on my personal photo site.
