In the How to be a DM class the kids have been taking turns running some short encounters. One of the students knows D&D pretty well already, but one has never played the game before. So I put the two together to see what they would come up with.
The 14 year old boy, the experienced player who has DMed some on his own, knows the rules and has a sense of humor. The inexperienced 13 year old girl is bright and imaginative. Her solo run earlier this Spring had some good puzzles. So I figured putting them together would result in a more well rounded and complete scenario, and I was not disappointed.
The testing party, played by the other students in the class, were tasked with retrieving the coffee supply from a coffee wizard. This wizard had two barista assistants, armed with bandoliers of coffee mugs which they filled with hot coffee to throw at the party.
The fight was excellent and well balanced. There were good descriptions of the attacks and the action moved at a good pace. Class ended but everyone wanted to keep going so we used some of our lunch period to at least end the fight.
In the next session the party will need to solve some sort of puzzle to unlock the vault holding the treasure: the coffee wizard's prime supply. I can't wait to see what sort of creative challenge they throw at the class, and how they react to the players' chaotic natures.
