Coding engaging enhancements for D&D
Note added later
I haven’t been using Roll20 for years now. The macros and API scripts below may still be interesting as a historical snapshot, but they are probably severely outdated relative to how Roll20 works today.
I’m no longer interested in maintaining or extending this work unless someone pays me a lot of money.
I’ve been writing macros and API scripts to make Roll20 games more engaging—adding audio and visual effects to spells and attacks while cutting down on the busywork at the table.
These freely available enhancements live on GitHub:
https://github.com/rhelwig/roll20-scripts-powercards
Much of the approach is inspired by Nick Olivo’s PowerCard videos (YouTube channel). His half-hour walkthrough is especially worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIBo_BMpSNo
I plan to keep adding spells and attacks and to deepen what the macros can do. Right now they apply damage to the target without accounting for vulnerabilities, resistances, or immunities—I’m working on an API script that handles that automatically. Non-AOE cantrips and all the SRD non-magical weapons are already in good shape, with 1st-level spells next.
If you’d like these set up for your D&D 5e game on Roll20 but don’t want to install and configure them yourself, I can do that for a reasonable fee. Invite me to the game and promote me to GM once I’ve joined—then contact me and we’ll get it running.
